FBC interim pastor writes new book
By Robert Fox

Dan Crawford, interim pastor at First Baptist Church, recently published a new book, "Mud Hen in a Peacock Parade: A funny thing happened on the way to heaven."

The title itself is a funny story told in the introduction to the book.

The book, published by Hannibal Books, is available through Amazon.com or many bookstores.

The book isn't a linear story; it's a collection of funny things that happened to Crawford through his life. There are a few stories from other people toward the end of the book.

"Ever since I was a teen, funny things happened around me or because of me," he said.

He said he's been writing down the funny stories from his life for about 15 years. He started assembling them for the book about two years ago when he stopped teaching at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

"It was easy and fun to write," he said.

Laugh With Jesus to Relieve Stress

Does the daily news create knots of fear in your stomach? Do you dread the arrival of your 401k statement? Is the emotional environment at your job uneasy? The current economy and the uncertainty in many industries are creating overwhelming amounts of stress and anxiety. What could be better to combat these negative emotions than a bit of laughter? Dan R. Crawford has taken the expression, "Laughter is the best medicine," and put it into practice. In his new book, Mud Hen in a Peacock Parade: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Heaven, Dr. Crawford recounts many of the hilarious events that occured during his numerous years around churchgoers.

In short-story form, Dr. Crawford illustrates tale after comical tale of those days when kids didn't wear bike helmets and those small towns where pastors were paid in canned goods. He talks of childhood stories, such as the time his mother suddenly surprised him and his friend who were playing a game of cops and robbers. He fondly recalls incidents of boyhood pranks and misforutnes at church camps and Wednesday evening activities, including a time when his friend, then-future governor of Texas, nearly kicked a football through a church window. Dr. Crawford mentions the goat-meat sandwiches in college, baptistery mishaps during his years as pastor and stories involving fires and antihistamine-use during wedding ceremonies.

In a more serious introduction to the collection of stories, Dr. Crawford explains that he understands that difficult circumstances can't simply be laughed away. However, he believes that God created each person with a need to laugh in order to keep the body and soul healthy. Dr. Crawford cites numerous examples of laughter in the Bible and fully believes that Jesus laughed with his disciples during His time on earth. Numerous scientific studies have even concluded that laughter can be just as helpful in reducing stress and pain as relaxation techniques and minor analgesics.

In an endorsement of the book, Dr. Dennis "The Swan" Swanberg, America's Minister of Encouragement, says "Grab a cup of dark-roast coffee -- doctor it up a tad -- and find your favorite chair and consume some GREAT comedic commentaries on life provided by Dr. Mud Hen himself -- Dr. Reverend 'not so holy' Professor Dan Crawford. Dan gives us 'laughter' with pleny of 'life' on it!"

Dan R. Crawford is senior professor of evangelism and missions, chair of prayer, emeritus, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, TX, and author compiler of 17 books including God's Formula for Genuine Happiness and Giving Ourselves to Prayer. Dr. Crawford has spoken and ministered in all 50 states and 56 foreign countries. He and his wife, Joanne, are retired and living in Fort Worth, TX.

Old Testament Offers Opportunity for Spiritual Growth

Deceit and murder. Nakedness and shame. Worldwide flood. Animal Sacrifices. Sound like scenes from a movie? These are actually topics from the Old Testament of the Bible. In Created to be Spiritual: Understanding God's daily battle with Satan for the hearts and minds of His people, veteran author Joe E. Tarry journeys through story after dramatic story in the Old Testament to show how Satan tries to undermine the spiritual growth of believers.

In his conversational tone, Tarry begins the walk through the Old Testament with an in-depth look at the perfectly spiritual first couple - Adam and Eve - and then the six major consequences of their sin. Tarry traces the diabolical lineage of humanity and compares it to God's spiritual lineage. He includes well-known events such as Noah's ark and the flood and Abraham's near-sacrifics of his son, but adds unique perspectives and factual details to create an overall picture of God's plan and purpose for people.

Throughout Created to be Spiritual, Tarry portrays Satan's shifty behavior and tactics that he uses to undermine the human race. The book illustrates God's constant, holy character and how he adjusts His strategies to provide for and protect His people. the book answers questions such as Where does evil originate? and How can evil penetrate a perfect world? Tarry discusses other topics, including the purpose of angels, the results of sin, the dangers of alcohol and the importance of tithes.

Tarry's detailed commentary and abundant use of Scripture make the Old Testament easy to understand and apply to everyday life. Further practicality, Tarry includes questions for reflection at the end of each chapter that can be for personal or small-group use.

"Rather than a technical or critical commentary, this book is a comprehensive overview of the Old Testament. It is devotional, practical, and filled with moral and ethical applications. the literary style is conversational and dialogical. Like a drama the story unfolds in a way that keeps the reader's interest," writes Dr. Dwight B. Lowrie Sr., pastor of Liberty-Eylau Baptist Church and coordinator of Brazil Partnership Missions, in an endorsement of the book.

Joe E. Tarry was born near Lovington, NM, in 1935. He graduated with a double major and received a bachelor of arts in religion and history from Eastern New Mexico University and a master of divinity from Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Leona, are retired missionaries and live in Ruidoso, NM. His first book, Did Paul Approve of the Tongues Spoken in Corinth?, explores 1 and 2 Corinthians and Paul's conclusions about the practice of speaking in tongues.
