Changes continue to sweep through the book-publishing industry. In
droves more consumers are buying directly from publishers such as
Hannibal Books on its websites and turning to e-books.
Consequently the brick-and-mortar bookstores, including Christian bookstores, either are closing or are having to change their entire operations dramatically.
Recently Christian Booksellers Association reported that because of
these changes as well as because of the weak and turbulent economy, its
former chairperson is closing his family-operated Christian bookstore in Kentucky.
The
phenomenon is worldwide. In another CBA story Chris Johnsen, founder
of Christian Art Distributors based in South Africa, noted, "Christian
retail has come to a fork on the road. The day and age of the
traditional retailer is over."
With free shipping for all retail
purchases, we at Hannibal are making it easier and
cheaper than ever to obtain our books.

E-Books Published Through Hannibal and CrossHouse Help Authors Reach a Broader Audience
In another exciting expansion Hannibal Books and CrossHouse Publishing have begun to release their books in digital versions available through Amazon's Kindle and Barnes & Noble's Nook, as well as many other popular e-reader applications.
Throughout the past few years the digital book industry has exploded. According to the Association of American Publishers, the industry's national trade organization, growth still is occurring at an incredible rate. The AAP's report states that digital formats of books saw revenue gains of 145.7 percent in March 2011 versus March 2010.
We saw this as another fantastic opportunity for authors to reach an even broader spectrum of readers. As soon as its print version is released, every new book will be available as an e-book. Then throughout the next year we will release all previously published books in digital formats. Browse the Hannibal books and CrossHouse books currently available on Amazon's Kindle.
Recent industry reports also indicate that this growth does not mean print books are obsolete. Bowker, the global leader in bibliographic information, released its annual report that states that in 2010, traditional U.S. print titles increased output by five percent after a four-percent increase the previous year. Even more encouraging is the 169-percent increase from 2009 to 2010 in the non-traditional print sector of self-publishing and micro-niche publications.
Great opportunities abound in the publishing world. We are thrilled to be able to offer our authors and their readers greater variety along with our traditional print offerings.

New Book Launches Spanish-Language Division of CrossHouse Publishing
Diez Elecciones de Vida, the Spanish translation of Bob Perdue's Ten Life Choices (CrossHouse Publishing, 2010) is the inaugural release of Casa de la Cruz, the Spanish imprint of CrossHouse Publishing and Hannibal Books.
CrossHouse, the self-publishing division of KLMK Communications, has added numerous English-language books to its collection since its inception in 2003. Dr. Katie Welch, publisher of CrossHouse, saw this Spanish-language division as a natural fit with the company's goals. Many authors who have worked either with CrossHouse or Hannibal Books, KLMK's traditional publishing division, have served as missionaries in Spanish-speaking countries and desire to have their books published in Spanish. And, as the population of Spanish-speaking people within the U.S. increases, authors will have an incredible opportunity to reach that audience with their message.
Dr. Welch, whose doctoral work in linguistics focused specifically on the Spanish language, has a passion for and is excited to see the Christian evangelical message translated into Spanish. She hopes to have many more Spanish-language books join the ranks in the future. As Casa de la Cruz continues to grow, KLMK Communications, Inc. will be adding additional staff members capable of proofreading and editing in Spanish.
Diez Elecciones de Vida is about overcoming our pasts (sin, wounds, abuse, rejection, etc.) and dealing with our present (depression, addictions, codependent relationships, shame, guilt, etc.) to live life to the fullest--to experience fulfillment, satisfaction, happiness and meaningful relationships. In John 10:10 Jesus says that He came to give us life--life to the fullest! He makes life a possibility for everyone, because He paid for all of our past and present problems. We have been given the power to choose life and to experience it every day . . . the life we were created to live! Diez Elecciones de Vida by Bob Perdue highlights 10 specific and practical choices that lead us to the life we were always meant to live.
For additional information about Casa de la Cruz, contact Dr. Welch at katie@crosshousepublishing.org.

New CrossHouse Books Website Indicative of Self-Publishing Industry's Success
This article is taken from our monthly e-newsletter. Send an email with your name and email address to HannibalBooksPR@gmail.com to sign up for the newsletter.
Nearly a year-and-a-half ago I wrote in this column about some of the amazing changes sweeping the book-publishing industry--in particular the dramatic move from traditional to self-publishing models. Much of the push toward this new model was linked to a desire on the part of authors to avoid the traditional "sieve" for manuscripts which limited the number of new books published each year, the interest of authors in controlling the end results of their books, decreasing costs, increased distribution opportunities and a book-price war between major retailers.
Since I last addressed the topic, the self-publishing industry has continued to thrive, especially with the expansion of the e-book market and continued dramatic increase toward online book sales.
Both the New York Times and Time magazine as well as most major newspapers and other media have run articles noting the historic shift and calling the triumph of self-publishing over the traditional model a revolution of monumental proportions.
Now, nearly eight years since we started our own self-publishing imprint, CrossHouse Publishing, we are proud to announce a new website dedicated solely to our self-published books: CrossHouse Books. The site resembles the original Hannibal Books' site--which will continue to offer the books published traditionally--so navigation will be familiar for those who have visited our site in the past.
The benefits to this site include better designation between our two imprints for the media and distributors, better tracking of book sales for ourselves and our authors and a stronger branding for our CrossHouse imprint. And, as always, every order benefits our customers because of free shipping and fair pricing.Continue to keep a close eye on the publishing industry. Great things are happening; lots of changes continue to make their way into the arena.

Blogs Illustrate Changing Ways Authors Are Expanding Their Reach
This article is taken from Hannibal Books' monthly e-newsletter. Send an email with your name and email address to HannibalBooksPR@gmail.com to sign up for the newsletter.
Readers today have many different options for digesting books. Of course, at the moment, the traditional paper version remains supreme, but sales and research indicate this is changing rapidly-- how fast depends on who you ask.
Much of the discussion involves i-Pads and E-readers, but a whole different dimension is involved, too. Authors are taking to the Internet to promote their books through their own websites and blogs, as well as through Facebook accounts, YouTube productions, blogs, and so forth.
Kay Wheeler Moore's new blog, The Newfangled Country Gardener, is an example of what Hannibal Books and CrossHouse Publishing are encouraging their authors to do. We are telling our authors to expand their horizons and look for creative ways to engage their readers. Kay, author of Way Back in the Country Garden, is exemplifying this: her delightful recipe book provides the core from which the blog expounds.
Typically updated five days a week, The Newfangled Country Gardener provides photos and descriptions of recipes, tips on gardening, and insights into eating healthy. Recipes such as Skillet Gnocchi with Spinach and White Beans, "Big-Easy" Gumbo, Mediterranean Chicken Salad, and Praline-Pecan French Toast not only tantalize the taste buds but recommend essential nutrients to staying healthy.
The blog was inspired by Kay's newest book, Way Back in the Country Garden, which features six generations of recipes that call for fresh-from-the-garden ingredients. Included are fascinating stories centering around the Three Red-Haired Miller Girls (Kay's mother and aunts), who grew up in Delta County, TX, with their own backyard garden so lavish that they felt as though they were royalty after their Mama wielded her kitchen magic on all that was homegrown. Way Back in the Country Garden was the sequel to Way Back in the Country, Kay's first recipe book published in 2002.
Kay's blog picks up where her book leaves off with everyday stories about "Hubby" (since Kay happens to be married to me, her blog can get a little personal at times) and our attempts to eat a much healthier diet.
On several occasions when Kay has been unable to post on a particular day, faithful blog readers email her to find out whether she is ill or out of pocket--a clear indication of how well the blog is being read.
Like Kay, more and more Hannibal and CrossHouse authors are finding that their blogs are natural extensions of their books' outreach. Be sure to check to see whether your favorite Hannibal or CrossHouse author has joined the parade yet.
Meanwhile, those of you wanting our books in electronic forms, hang on to your seats for a few more months until we unveil plans to make all of our books available in all the electronic formats available today. Already some of our most popular books are being field-tested for this developing revolution.

Stay in Charge of Your Choices in the New Year
We can't always control what life dishes out to us in the course of a year, but we can choose how we respond to those circumstances.
In his new book 365 Days of Life: Choosing Life in Christ One Day at a Time, Pastor Bob Perdue delivers to the reader 365 days' worth of choices that spring directly from the pages of God's Word. Pithy, poignant, personal devotional meditations are accompanied by Scripture truths as well as interactive thoughts designed to help the reader determine what choice toward life he or she will make each day.
Bob shares from his sometimes-painful life pilgrimage in hopes of helping people pull back any layers that might hinder them from a closer walk with the Lord. With zany devotional titles such as "Choose Starbucks" and "Choose to Chill" alongside those such as "Choose Honesty" and "Choose Grace" readers will be entertained as well as challenged to take their choice-making to a deeper level.

Don't Miss Out on Dramatic Changes Sweeping Book Publishing Today
(This article appeared in the Hannibal Books e-newsletter. To receive this newsletter, send an email to HannibalBooksPR@gmail.com.)
Six years after Hannibal Books created CrossHouse Publishing as its cutting-edge, self-publishing arm, this year most of the larger publishers of Christian books have followed suit. One, in fact, even chose a name very similar to our CrossHouse label.
Why is this happening? Because book publishing has entered a dramatic, transformational era which is overthrowing more than 400 years of the traditional way of doing things. I highly recommend that you read the article entitled "Books Gone Wild: The Digital Age Reshapes Literature" in the January 18, 2009, issue of Time magazine. This article prophetically forecast the current trend in book publishing's shift away from traditional to self-publishing models.
With today's technology just about anyone can become an author. Costs are dropping; new avenues for distribution are opening up worldwide. The book-price war going on among Amazon.com, Wal-Mart, Target and Barnes and Noble is just one piece of this fascinating revolution occurring right before our eyes.
Amazon's recent decision to give away free a PC version of its pricey Kindle book reader is another example of the kaleidoscope of changes happening now--or those on the horizon.
To learn more about these life-altering trends, join us at the 2010 Mark Twain School for Authors on Feb. 26-28, 2010.
And if you want to be a part of this transformational era, contact CrossHouse Publishing's Dr. Katie Welch (crosshousepublishing@earthlink.net) for information on how easily you, too, can become a trend-setting, up-to-date version of a self-published author.

Congrats to Key Player at Hannibal Books, CrossHouse Publishing
From the business/ministry e-newsletter of Hannibal Books and CrossHouse Publishing (sign up for the e-newsletter by emailing hannibalbooks@earthlink.net) ...
Life offers many choices, so we're pleased to report that a key player in our publishing companies has just been rewarded for making some eminently sound ones.
Katie Welch, who is the publisher of Hannibal Books' sister company, CrossHouse Publishing, has just received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. For Katie this effort represents 25 years of schooling without a break in stride!
After high-school graduation she graduated summa cum laude in 3 1/2 years from Baylor University with a bachelor of arts degree and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She did her master's work at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Dallas Baptist University.
Her doctorate, awarded Aug. 15 at UTA, was in the field of linguistics. A Spanish scholar, her dissertation focused on the process by which students learn politeness terms as they acquire proficiency in a foreign language.

All this was occurring while Katie worked to give a high degree of individualized attention to countless authors at CrossHouse Publishing and coordinated numerous Hannibal special events such as the annual Mark Twain School for Authors.and exhibits at the Christian Booksellers Association convention.
With this part of her academic career behind her, Katie will continue as CrossHouse Publisher plus will absorb more of the day-to-day operations of Hannibal Books. She has a strong interest in developing Spanish curriculum as an offering through Hannibal/CrossHouse. We believe she will add a special way of relating to a new generation of younger, potential authors who desire to see themselves in print.
Katie, we are proud of your accomplishments! You are a positive representation of our company. And, oh, by the way, did I mention that I speak not only as a proud employer but also as a proud dad? That's right! Katie is none other than Dr. Catharine Moore Welch, God's special gift to her mom and me and to the scores of authors and customers who enter into contact with her via KLMK Communications.
