Author Discusses Jehovah's Witnesses on Crosspoint with Mark Taylor

A few weeks ago author Joe B. Hewitt (Rescuing Slaves of the Watchtower) talked with Mark Taylor on Crosspoint about the book and about Jehovah's Witnesses. You can now listen to the interview here.

In a spellbinding look at the Watchtower Society, Joe B. Hewitt, formerly a third-generation Jehovah's Witness who was indoctrinated by his mother and grandfather with Watchtower teachings, pulls back the curtain of mystery and exposes lies, the mind control, and the glaring contradictions of biblical truth behind the organization that has sent those smiling faces to your front door. His book contains heartbreaking stories of former adherents, including himself, who were betrayed by the JW's.

Joe says instead of evangelizing others, the Witnesses themselves need to be rescued from the cult-like organization. The book describes how people who know the real truth of Christ's love can rescue the Watchtower's slaves from intellectual and emotional bondage.

Formerly a third-generation Jehovah's Witness, Joe B. Hewitt has dedicated himself to exposing the Watchtower's false teachings and to help Jehovah's Witnesses ascend from mental bondage into Christian liberty.

Many Thanks Go Out to Veterans Today

As we celebrate Veterans Day and honor those who have served our country--as well as their families--let's also be sure to remember in particular the families of veterans who are no longer with us. Your sacrifices mean so much to us, and we are forever grateful.

One of our recently published book's, Left Alive to Die, is just one example of the ultimate sacrifice made by a man and his family to help protect and serve the US. for Mary Lou Hall and her children, Heather and Harley Stephen, their husband and dad, accomplished and decorated U.S. aviator Harley Hall, who unflinchingly signed on for last-gasp missions over Vietnam even in the war's waning seconds in 1973, disappeared after his shootdown--his whereabouts never pinpointed. For his loved ones and for all who still miss him urgently, the question lingers: where is Harley? how could he so utterly vanish? why did the U.S. not charge in and demand an accounting for this one who had such a brilliant future ahead as a military star? why was he left alive to die?

Susan Keen, whose physician husband once served alongside Harley as Hall commanded the celebrated Navy's Blue Angels flight-demonstration team, masterfully and heartwrenchingly profiles Harley, last American pilot shot down before the cease fire; chronicles jarring evidence indicating that Hall remained alive for years after his capture; and outlines our government's humiliating response to his wife's and others' pleas to garner attention for this compelling case.

No American can read Keen's shocking book without being moved to impassioned prayer for those such as Mary Lou who have no closure and whose lives forever are devastated by a war that many would like to believe never happened.

Susan Keen is a mother of two, teacher, reader, and world traveler. A native of Mississippi, she holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Mississippi College, Clinton, MS. She has written and published two cookbooks, was an interior designer, is a graduate of several French cooking schools, and is a gourmet cook. She and her husband, Jack Keen, M.D., live in Fort Worth and are active members of Travis Avenue Baptist Church.

CrossHouse Publishing Amicably Launches out on Its Own After Seven Years Under Hannibal Books' Wing

As book-publishing undergoes dramatic changes brought on by the technological revolution sweeping the world today, CrossHouse Publishing reflects the best of those trends. The small, independently-owned, Christian-oriented company is designed and fashioned to meet the headwinds facing the industry as a whole and to soar on the backs of the eagle-like new technology available today.

On October 1, 2011, CrossHouse Publishing officially was spun off from its parent company, KLMK Communications, d.b.a. Hannibal Books, which birthed and nurtured the new company into maturity. Hannibal Books will continue in the path of traditional publishers while CrossHouse Publishing will move forward rapidly into the emerging book self-publishing culture.

Corporately small, agile, and flexible, CrossHouse is designed to provide personalized service to self-published authors who desire to drive their own books into success in the marketplace. This contrasts with larger self-publishing companies, which have in recent years created their own versions of CrossHouse and rely heavily on impersonal phone banks to market their products to authors using software-based products that often leave new authors frustrated and feeling cut off from the freedom they had been promised.

The new company, officially known as Cross Communciations, Inc., is headed by Dr. Katie Welch, a Phi Beta Kappa Baylor University graduate, who also holds a Ph.d. degree in linguistics from the University of Texas in Arlington. Prior to forming Cross Communciations, Inc., two months ago, Dr. Welch worked for KLMK Communications, Inc., nurturing and leading CrossHouse Publishing into maturity.

Louis Moore, owner of KLMK Communications, Inc., said, "We anticipate that under the new ownership arrangement the company will continue to flourish and grow as it has for the past seven years."

"CrossHouse personifies every positive trend emerging in the book-publishing world's crystal ball: self-publishing, in which authors have more control over their final product, a cafeteria approach to services loaded with special perks for authors, flexibility in structure, agility in performance, and already set up for and fully embracing the current trends in the industry. Besides all I have described, CrossHouse offers personalized, individualized service unlike what you would find in some of the larger, phone-bank, self-publishing operations out there today," Moore said.

Dr. Welch said CrossHouse will continue to place a "premium on individualized service and quality products".

"To assure our authors of the quality of our service, we are a member of the Dallas Better Business Bureau," she said.

"We want our authors to have a positive first experience with the book-publishing industry. In fact, many of our authors return to do their second, third, or even eighth books with us."

"CrossHouse works with lay people, pastors, missionaries, women's ministry people, mom, dads, and anyone who wants to share their story," said Dr. Welch. She said the company's selection of authors has less to do with denominational labels and more to do with having an authentic, inspiring life message to share.

The company publishes trade books, fiction, non-fiction, devotionals, Bible-study materials, children's books, poetry books, and e-books.

For more information on CrossHouse Publishing, contact Dr. Welch at CrossHouse Publishing, 2844 S. FM 549, Rockwall, TX 75032, or by email at katie@crosshousepublishing.org, or by calling 1-877-212-0933.

Today is National POW/MIA Recognition Day

2011 National POW/MIA Recognition Day poster
Traditionally observed on the third Friday in September, National POW/MIA Recognition Day is set aside to honor prisoners of war and remember those still missing in action. An overview of this day can be found at the VFWLady blog.

Recently, Hannibal Books released Left Alive to Die, a compelling story of one such American who was missing in action and then assumed a prisoner of war: legendary naval aviator CAPT Harley Hall. To read more about this book, visit the previous entry that summarized the book.

New Book Recounts Dramatic POW/MIA Story

On September 16, 2011, the nation will honor the more than 83,000 Americans who are missing from World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, the Vietnam War and the 1991 Gulf War, as well as the countless American men and women who were captured as prisoners of war.

A new book, Left Alive to Die, tells the story of one such American: legendary naval aviator CAPT Harley Hall. Flying a crucial mission hours before the 1973 Vietnam War cease-fire, CAPT Hall was shot down above the Cua Viet River. Hall’s wingman and other squadron members watched while he safely parachuted to the ground. They were unaware that was the last time they would see or hear from Hall again.

At age 32 Hall was the youngest person in the Navy at that time with the rank of commander. In 1969 he achieved his lifelong dream as he became commanding officer of the Blue Angels, the U.S. Navy Precision Demonstration squadron. Not only was he an outstanding military officer, Hall was also a dedicated husband and father, an inspirational leader, a loving friend and a man of faith.

Left Alive to Die is written by Susan Keen, the wife of Jack Keen, M.D., LCDR, the U.S. Navy flight surgeon responsible for providing care to CAPT Hall’s Blue Angels team and the families. The book is a dramatic retelling of the romance of Mary Lou Marino and Hall, their marriage and life together and the tragedy of Hall’s disappearance. Readers will be captivated by details of Hall’s Navy experience, Mary Lou’s courageous life as a military wife and her years of searching for answers about Hall’s whereabouts.

In many ways Hall is a symbol of numerous Americans who may have been left alive in Vietnam as their government, according to this book, turned its back on them and left them in captivity. Mary Lou’s frustration over the lack of help is evident as the author describes Mary Lou’s efforts to persuade the government to pay attention to what she believed was overwhelming evidence that many men and women were still POW’s long after the formal war ended.

The Little Brown-Haired Girl Series Expands with Two New Books

The Little Brown-Haired Girl and the Bad Bug BiteThe Little Brown-Haired Girl and the SandboxIn the second book of the Little Brown-Haired Girl series, the Little Brown-Haired Girl once again is playing outside in her neighborhood--only this time she "forgets" her shoes. When she enters the garage to look for a ball, she is greeted by a very unpleasant visitor! OUCH! Through this unfortunate encounter the Little Brown-Haired Girl realizes the importance of listening to and obeying her parents.

In the third book of the Little Brown-Haired Girl series, the Little Brown-Haired Girl invites her friend Nan over to play in her new sandbox. Everything is going great until the Little Brown-Haired Girl finds herself covered in sand. It's in her eyes, her mouth--everywhere! Even worse, her friend Nan is to blame for this mess . . . or is she?

These two join the first book, The Little Brown-Haired Girl and the Secret-Tree Club. They are illustrated by Nathaniel Platts and are written by Kay Moore, who feels fortunate to live in her "growing-up" neighborhood where she daily can walk by the site of the sandbox and bug-bite incidents and still can climb in her special tree.

New Book Exposes Jehovah's Witness' Beliefs, Explains How to Help Watchtower Victims

Though its members represent one of the fastest-growing religions in the world, the Jehovah's Witnesses remain one of the most enigmatic and puzzling groups to many people today. Few people never have been visited by a "Witness", but what exactly do these determined people actually believe? What makes them so different from other Christian denominations?

In this spellbinding look at the Watchtower Society, Joe B. Joe says instead of evangelizing others, the Witnesses themselves need to be rescued from the cult-like organization. The book describes how people who know the real truth of Christ's love can rescue the Watchtower's slaves from intellectual and emotional bondage.

Bob Dean, executive director of the Dallas Baptist Association, says, "Rescuing Slaves of the Watchtower is a compelling personal story and a well-researched documentary of what really goes on in the Watchtower Society. Joe Hewitt, a former Jehovah Witness, writes with insight in how to communicate freedom in Christ to prisoners of the Watchtower. You will find this book to be an inspiring story but also a great resource of historical facts and biblical truth concerning Jehovah Witnesses."

"Incorrigible"-Rebel-Turned-Trophy-of-Grace on WBCL's Mid-Morning with Lynn Ford

Listen to Iris' June 20th interview on WBCL's Mid-Morning show here. Six wonderful authors are featured during the show's Author! Author! segment. (Iris is on the show from minutes 21:29 to 32:14.)

Iris was raised in a middle-class Christian home, but she was rebellious almost from the start. Running away at the age of thirteen, she became involved with drugs and prostitution, and at seventeen was arrested for armed robbery. Once released from prison, she continued down a path of self-destruction. From numerous abortions to using heroin, to managing a topless bar, Iris turned from God's calling again and again.

But God, who in eternity past had devised a plan for this "incorrigible" rebel, didn't give up on Iris. He had work for her to do, and would one day turn this "incorrigible" rebel into one of His beautiful trophies of grace. Iris: Trophy of Grace by Ron Owens with Iris Blue details Iris' life, from self-destruction to God's salvation.

E-Books Published Through Hannibal and CrossHouse Help Authors Reach a Broader Audience

In another exciting expansion Hannibal Books and CrossHouse Publishing have begun to release their books in digital versions available through Amazon's Kindle and Barnes & Noble's Nook, as well as many other popular e-reader applications.

Throughout the past few years the digital book industry has exploded. According to the Association of American Publishers, the industry's national trade organization, growth still is occurring at an incredible rate. The AAP's report states that digital formats of books saw revenue gains of 145.7 percent in March 2011 versus March 2010.

We saw this as another fantastic opportunity for authors to reach an even broader spectrum of readers. As soon as its print version is released, every new book will be available as an e-book. Then throughout the next year we will release all previously published books in digital formats. Browse the Hannibal books and CrossHouse books currently available on Amazon's Kindle.

Recent industry reports also indicate that this growth does not mean print books are obsolete. Bowker, the global leader in bibliographic information, released its annual report that states that in 2010, traditional U.S. print titles increased output by five percent after a four-percent increase the previous year. Even more encouraging is the 169-percent increase from 2009 to 2010 in the non-traditional print sector of self-publishing and micro-niche publications.

Great opportunities abound in the publishing world. We are thrilled to be able to offer our authors and their readers greater variety along with our traditional print offerings.

Delve into the Life of an Unsung Texas Hero

Ernest T. "Bull" Adams was the first-ever Rhodes Scholar from Baylor University, but he spent most of his adult years on his knees sifting through the dirt as he unearthed clues about the earliest humans. He was a formidably brilliant lawyer and apt public official, yet he tenderheartedly devoted much of his professional career to representing the down-and-out.

Blessed with Herculean physical prowess that earned him his nickname, this gentle giant was most at home while he entranced youngsters from his hometown in Glen Rose, TX, with yarns about his rugged, enigmatic life. A highly contagious illness during young manhood relegated Bull to rambling throughout the Southwest, thus spending lonely years away from loved ones, yet none was more esteemed than this oft-unkempt, unconventional legend who left behind a vast legacy of knowledge through his passion for the ancients.

Dr. Jeffery J. Pruitt, whose family along with the rampaging "Bull" shared Central Texas roots near the Paluxy River, artfully unravels, in This Man Called Bull, the life of this complex creature, whose genius continues to influence others even today. Dr. Pruitt authentically describes this "Bullish" hero who never knew the word quit and who dared to be a different spirit.

New Book Launches Spanish-Language Division of CrossHouse Publishing

Diez Elecciones de Vida, the Spanish translation of Bob Perdue's Ten Life Choices (CrossHouse Publishing, 2010) is the inaugural release of Casa de la Cruz, the Spanish imprint of CrossHouse Publishing and Hannibal Books.

CrossHouse, the self-publishing division of KLMK Communications, has added numerous English-language books to its collection since its inception in 2003. Dr. Katie Welch, publisher of CrossHouse, saw this Spanish-language division as a natural fit with the company's goals. Many authors who have worked either with CrossHouse or Hannibal Books, KLMK's traditional publishing division, have served as missionaries in Spanish-speaking countries and desire to have their books published in Spanish. And, as the population of Spanish-speaking people within the U.S. increases, authors will have an incredible opportunity to reach that audience with their message.

Dr. Welch, whose doctoral work in linguistics focused specifically on the Spanish language, has a passion for and is excited to see the Christian evangelical message translated into Spanish. She hopes to have many more Spanish-language books join the ranks in the future. As Casa de la Cruz continues to grow, KLMK Communications, Inc. will be adding additional staff members capable of proofreading and editing in Spanish.

Diez Elecciones de Vida is about overcoming our pasts (sin, wounds, abuse, rejection, etc.) and dealing with our present (depression, addictions, codependent relationships, shame, guilt, etc.) to live life to the fullest--to experience fulfillment, satisfaction, happiness and meaningful relationships. In John 10:10 Jesus says that He came to give us life--life to the fullest! He makes life a possibility for everyone, because He paid for all of our past and present problems. We have been given the power to choose life and to experience it every day . . . the life we were created to live! Diez Elecciones de Vida by Bob Perdue highlights 10 specific and practical choices that lead us to the life we were always meant to live.

One Man's Martyrdom Didn't End His Story or His Music

The 1930s were very difficult years for Christians in the lands of Russia. Thousands laid down their lives for their faith. Among these was Georgy (pron: Gay-or-ghee) Slesarev, first violinist of Moscow's prestigious Bolshoi Theater Orchestra.

They Could Not Stop the Music is the story of one believer who, rather than choosing to hide his faith and make life easy for himself, his wife and two children, chose to let his light shine in the midst of one of the darkest periods in history when being a witness meant, more often than not, martyrdom. But for this servant of Christ, hiding his faith was never an option because he saw his position in the world-renowned musical body as a direct assignment from God. He had been placed there to be His witness, which eventually led to Georgy's arrest and confinement in a Siberian Gulag.

The twist in Georgy's story, however, is sparked by the opportunity he was given to return to his position with the orchestra and to his family. The condition: He would have to sign a document promising never to share about Christ again. Even though Georgy refused to sign the document and was subsequently executed, they tried but they could not stop the music.

    Beauty Sells, but What's Beautiful?

From today's vantage point beauty is defined by personal tastes and popular opinions. But in God's eyes, what is true beauty? If the Bible could define what beauty is, what would the outcome be?

In The Purple Curtain, pastor Brian Chan examines beauty from a biblical perspective and how it affects our relationship with God. Chan contends that understanding true beauty can change broken people as they discover more of God's loveliness and--in turn--grow to love Him more. He explores cultural ideas about beauty from historical and contemporary philosophers, artists, writers, films, art and stories.

Readers will learn how they can recognize authentic beauty daily and will be challenged to make beauty out of brokenness as they grow in God's love and as witnesses of Christ.

Brian S. Chan was born in San Francisco as a Chinese American and is married to Ellen. He graduated from the University of California, Davis, with B.A.'s in psychology and sociology and from Dallas Theological Seminary with a Th.M. in historical theology and a M.A. in Christian Education. He completed his thesis study on the subject of the beauty of God. He has exhibited his artwork in the San Francisco Bay area, Chicago and Dallas. He is the founding and lead pastor of One Thing Church in Hollywood, CA, and a faculty member at Biola University. A passionate love for God drives him to pastor, write, create and live.

New CrossHouse Books Website Indicative of
    Self-Publishing Industry's Success

This article is taken from our monthly e-newsletter. Send an email with your name and email address to HannibalBooksPR@gmail.com to sign up for the newsletter.

Nearly a year-and-a-half ago I wrote in this column about some of the amazing changes sweeping the book-publishing industry--in particular the dramatic move from traditional to self-publishing models. Much of the push toward this new model was linked to a desire on the part of authors to avoid the traditional "sieve" for manuscripts which limited the number of new books published each year, the interest of authors in controlling the end results of their books, decreasing costs, increased distribution opportunities and a book-price war between major retailers.

Since I last addressed the topic, the self-publishing industry has continued to thrive, especially with the expansion of the e-book market and continued dramatic increase toward online book sales.

Both the New York Times and Time magazine as well as most major newspapers and other media have run articles noting the historic shift and calling the triumph of self-publishing over the traditional model a revolution of monumental proportions.

Now, nearly eight years since we started our own self-publishing imprint, CrossHouse Publishing, we are proud to announce a new website dedicated solely to our self-published books: CrossHouse Books. The site resembles the original Hannibal Books' site--which will continue to offer the books published traditionally--so navigation will be familiar for those who have visited our site in the past.

The benefits to this site include better designation between our two imprints for the media and distributors, better tracking of book sales for ourselves and our authors and a stronger branding for our CrossHouse imprint. And, as always, every order benefits our customers because of free shipping and fair pricing.

Continue to keep a close eye on the publishing industry. Great things are happening; lots of changes continue to make their way into the arena.

Can't Travel to the Holy Land?
This Devotional Will Take You There Spiritually

What do the key sites from the land of the Bible teach us about how to live our lives today? Pastor and acclaimed tour leader Dr. John DeLancey contends that one's own faith can be deepened by examining significant ancient sites of the Holy Land and deriving spiritual applications from them.

In his unique site-to-site devotional guide, Devotional Treasures from the Holy Land, Dr. DeLancey--drawing on a year of study in Jerusalem and two decades of experience in leading tours to Israel, Jordan, and Egypt--guides the reader through 68 ancient sites including both common and lesser-known locations. For each site, DeLancey offers a remarkable blend of historical, geographical, and Scriptural information. He begins by updating the reader on archaeological excavations and interpreting the authenticity of the discoveries at each spot. He then follows with sound devotional thoughts that can be gleaned from each place mentioned.

His descriptions cause Bible stories to spring to life as he gives thoughtfully informed analyses shared based on years of careful research and of interaction with the Holy Land. Devotional Treasures from the Holy Land forms an invaluable help to those on tour in Bible lands as well as those who can experience them only from their armchairs at home.

John DeLancey is a pastor and founder of Biblical Israel Tours, a ministry designed to help people have a firsthand experience of Israel and other Bible lands. He has led numerous tours of the Holy Land and has excavated at two archaeological sites in Israel. He holds a degree in Biblical Studies from Cedarville University, a Master of Divinity degree from Westminster Seminary, and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Trinity Seminary. He has studied for one year at the Jerusalem University College in Israel. He and his wife, Sue, have three children.

"Sharing Your Faith With Muslims" Receives Honest Reviews

In a time when the Middle East is under such turmoil and Christians are being persecuted in that region seemingly more than in years' past (or at least the persecution is more publicized than in the past), Christians in the U.S. can have a mix of emotions regarding Muslims. In Wade Akins' new book, Sharing Your Faith With Muslims, he explains how Christians should relate to Muslims--with love and respect--and how Christians should understand at least the basics of the Islam faith to better discuss Christ with Muslims.     A Few Books in Honor of April Fools' Day

Since it's April Fools' Day, we thought you might enjoy a few ideas for books that will help you achieve true happiness or will just give you a few laughs.

God's Formula for Genuine Happiness
Have you ever wondered about how happy you really are? Questioned what it means to be genuinely happy? Or thought about exactly what you'd need in order to feel that way? Whatever you think of your current degree of happiness, you'll be encouraged by the simple, profound truths waiting within this book. Inside, Dr. Dan Crawford reveals the three clear-cut, scriptural ingredients to being happy.

Joy in the Journey
Traveling life's journey with the Lord Jesus Christ is not without bumps and pitfalls. Satan, our nemesis, dots the landscape with minefields of temptations and worldly allurements. When we study and obey God's Word and rely on God's Spirit, we know joy-unspeakable, unshakable, undeniable, unparalleled joy-joy in the midst of our circumstances and through the ups and downs and the twists and turns of life.

Mud Hen in a Peacock Parade
Go ahead and laugh. Jesus did. That’s what you will do while reading Dan Crawford’s Mud Hen in a Peacock Parade: A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to Heaven. He tells about church events, church people, and church leaders in a way that helps you see the humor instead of all the seriousness. Dr. Crawford believes Jesus enjoyed life. He imagines Jesus laughing with His disciples—or even at them. The author wants you to laugh, too. And you will laugh as you turn every page of this sparkling, hilarious book.

On the 8th Day, God Laughed
Who says God doesn't have a sense of humor? Certainly not three-time Emmy Award winner Gene Perret, who's laughed his way through life while he has earned his living writing jokes for such illuminaries as Bob Hope, Phyllis Diller, Carol Burnett, Bill Cosby and a host of others. On the 8th Day . . . God Laughed! is Perret's 17th book and contains 900 jokes, arranged alphabetically by topic and fully indexed, to make them readily accessible for writers, speakers, and yes--even preachers.

The Wit and Wisdom of Pastor Joe Brumbelow
What kind of preacher is a good-natured practical jokester one moment and a monofocused, passionate soul-winner the next? This book of anecdotes from the life of popular South Texas pastor Joe E. Brumbelow shoots down the image of the straight-laced, stereotypical clergyman and shows the serious and funny sides of a minister, husband, father, outdoorsman, and friend.

Misadventures in Travel
God's ambassadors on foreign soil . . . or sheep among wolves? Were Paula and Van Edwards called to Brazil to help spread the Good News of Jesus . . . or to gather material for a new slapstick comedy act? These "late-in-life" missionaries often believed they might be undertaking a bit of both activities.

    Blogs Illustrate Changing Ways Authors
    Are Expanding Their Reach

This article is taken from Hannibal Books' monthly e-newsletter. Send an email with your name and email address to HannibalBooksPR@gmail.com to sign up for the newsletter.

Readers today have many different options for digesting books. Of course, at the moment, the traditional paper version remains supreme, but sales and research indicate this is changing rapidly-- how fast depends on who you ask.

Much of the discussion involves i-Pads and E-readers, but a whole different dimension is involved, too. Authors are taking to the Internet to promote their books through their own websites and blogs, as well as through Facebook accounts, YouTube productions, blogs, and so forth.

Kay Wheeler Moore's new blog, The Newfangled Country Gardener, is an example of what Hannibal Books and CrossHouse Publishing are encouraging their authors to do. We are telling our authors to expand their horizons and look for creative ways to engage their readers. Kay, author of Way Back in the Country Garden, is exemplifying this: her delightful recipe book provides the core from which the blog expounds.

Typically updated five days a week, The Newfangled Country Gardener provides photos and descriptions of recipes, tips on gardening, and insights into eating healthy. Recipes such as Skillet Gnocchi with Spinach and White Beans, "Big-Easy" Gumbo, Mediterranean Chicken Salad, and Praline-Pecan French Toast not only tantalize the taste buds but recommend essential nutrients to staying healthy.

The blog was inspired by Kay's newest book, Way Back in the Country Garden, which features six generations of recipes that call for fresh-from-the-garden ingredients. Included are fascinating stories centering around the Three Red-Haired Miller Girls (Kay's mother and aunts), who grew up in Delta County, TX, with their own backyard garden so lavish that they felt as though they were royalty after their Mama wielded her kitchen magic on all that was homegrown. Way Back in the Country Garden was the sequel to Way Back in the Country, Kay's first recipe book published in 2002.

Kay's blog picks up where her book leaves off with everyday stories about "Hubby" (since Kay happens to be married to me, her blog can get a little personal at times) and our attempts to eat a much healthier diet.

On several occasions when Kay has been unable to post on a particular day, faithful blog readers email her to find out whether she is ill or out of pocket--a clear indication of how well the blog is being read.

Like Kay, more and more Hannibal and CrossHouse authors are finding that their blogs are natural extensions of their books' outreach. Be sure to check to see whether your favorite Hannibal or CrossHouse author has joined the parade yet.

Meanwhile, those of you wanting our books in electronic forms, hang on to your seats for a few more months until we unveil plans to make all of our books available in all the electronic formats available today. Already some of our most popular books are being field-tested for this developing revolution.

The Story of a Site Considered Small by People
     but Important to God

"Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" was the question Nathaniel asked when Philip told him about Jesus. For the uninitiated to God's agenda, the same might be said of those 16 acres, five miles east of Zachary, LA. But the ways of God are not discerned by people, and what might look like nothing more than ground and buildings is recorded in the annals of heaven as an address God has chosen to visit over the years--a "place of meeting" for thousands of hungry, thirsty souls. Read about this site in The Milldale Story--Its People, Its Mission, Its God by Ron Owens and Jodie Scoggins

Ron Owens--born in Canada, son of missionary parents to Europe--has multifaceted ministries. These include teaching, preaching, and music ministry in North America and beyond. He has authored other books and articles and has composed, recorded, and had published many songs in collaboration with his wife, Patricia. The Owens have one son, Jeff, a daughter-in-law, Jessica, and two grandsons, Ethan and Evan.

For One Couple, Retirement Means Short-Term Mission Service

Helen Spaulding's nest was being stirred again. Helen, home from a meaningful potpourri of overseas missions assignments, realized she and her husband, Roger, weren't fully content when sidelined for long from being active workers in God's missionary service.

Though now past retirement age, the Spauldings yearned again to do something of value to God and His needy children and to experience afresh the extravagant joy of being short-term missionaries.

This second book in Helen's three-part Go If You Must series covers the Spauldings' efforts to rebuild a church campground and to work on a church farm in Costa Rica, a stint in the Navajo Nation in the U.S., a return to Costa Rica for an evangelism mission, a work mission in Northern Finland, and a one-year missionary assignment to Khabarovsk, Far East Russia. Language challenges and frequent exhaustion accompany the Spauldings' rewards as they bridge cultural gaps and explain the love of Jesus in a way others can understand. As with her first book, Helen writes in hopes of raising up more workers to labor in Christ's overseas vineyards and to praise God for the wonderful opportunities He gives when people are willing to pack up and follow Him.

Helen Stephenson Spaulding is a writer who believes in sharing the vast experiences God has given her as a nurse, Peace Corps volunteer, church worker, teacher, musician, and missions volunteer. She has served in Liberia, Somalia, Costa Rica, Finland, the Navajo Nation, Peru, Far East Russia, and several Central American countries--most of these assignments alongside her husband, Roger. Her other interests are raising and showing Saddlebred colts, taxidermy, and crafts.
